COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Regional integration in Africa started with a dream and took shape through institutions and projects aimed at ensuring shared prosperity. The dream, that of African unity, was the main topic of a groundbreaking international gathering, the first Pan-African Conference in 1900. One of the key participants to that conference, W.E.B. Du Bois, lived to see the dream of African unity evolve to fully-fledged institution, the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in May 1963.

Regional integration is both political and economic. It is a tool to institutionalize continental unity and maximize the interests of all member countries through increased trade.

We will study the main political and economic theories of regional integration, the institutions driving African regional integration and four regional economic communities in Eastern, Southern, Central and Western Africa.
