Objectifs

The goals of the course are twofold. First, it aims to familiarize students with the principal alternative approaches to borders, borderlands, walls, and border management practices. Second, it enables students to participate in and contribute to contemporary debates on border processes using theoretically-informed empirical analysis.

Présentation

This course aims to familiarize students with the processes by which borders are made, and their significance. In exploring this question, the course takes students on a tour through the corpus of thought on borders and politics of borders. Broadly speaking, the course covers two main areas.

The first part is an overview of different concepts and their implications (Borders and boundaries; Borders, fences, and walls; Borderlands and border economies). Rather than offering a definitive narrative explaining what borders are and what they do, students will be encouraged to consider a number of possible declinations of the functions of borders and their usage, as well as interactions among these sources.

The second part is the application of such concepts to specific border areas, or border management practices. The course will look at, alternatively, EU and US border management practices, and lesser known cases such as bordering processes in the South Caucasus, the Sahara-Sahel, Kaliningrad, and Ireland. Students will be required to apply the notions and analytical tools acquired in the first part of the course to the various cases, as well as to investigate a specific case-study in depth.
