Prérequis

Economics : no prerequisites.
Mathematics : derivatives, exponential, resolutions of equations.

Objectifs

The course aims at providing students with the basic theoretical and mathematical tools of microeconomics. The following topics are explored :
• The theoretical background of economic rationality (methodological individualsm, opportunity costs, satisfaction),
• The concept of utility and the problem of the coherence of individual’s preferences,
• The framework of the individual’s choices and the different tools derived from it (demand functions, elasticities),
• The problem of choices under uncertainty,
• The economics of the firm,
• Introductory elements to the market equilibrium (average receipt, marginal receipt, and the different forms of market structure).

Chapter 3 : The consumer’s choice – Confronting objectives to constraints
Chapter 4 : Choices under uncertainty – The interests and limits of rationality
Chapter 5 : The firm – Production, efficiency, and costs
Chapter 6 : An introduction to market equilibrium
