Présentation

Prérequis

General knowledge of European politics and European public debates.

Objectifs

In the last decades, a series of principles, described by several institutions and political actors as “European values” have often been at the core of political debates, especially when acute crises seemed to put them at risk. The values at stake are, among others, human dignity, solidarity, rule of law, democracy, transparency, equality and non-discrimination. The main objective of this course is to understand in which critical contexts such principles are mobilized and by whom and to explore what this mobilization reveals of European politics and identity.

Présentation

After presenting what are EU/European values, and what they could or should be according to various actors, the course focuses on a series of crises and intense political debates to observe which values are debated on these occasions and the type of politicization/cleavages they produce:

  • Sovereign debt crisis

  • Austerity policies

  • Rule of law

  • TTIP/CETA and trade agreements (with the intervention of a specialist)

  • Debates on bioethics

  • Migration crisis

  • COVID-19 crisis
