This course will examine the various different aspects of the EU's external relations – its trade policies, development aid, foreign policy, and security and defence policy. These can include topics such as the politics of EU trade treaties such as CETA and TTIP, the EU approach to international issues such as climate change and migration, the gradual evolution of an EU foreign policy, and the debates over an EU defence dimension. The course will start with an overview of theoretical approaches that can be used to analyse and interpret the EU’s external relations, and will also set out some of the decision-making structures and processes that underpin EU policy-making in these spheres.
