COURSE CONTENT The Balkans have often been characterized by ethnic rivalries, the rise and collapse of democratic and dictatorial regimes, and multiple ethnic wars. This course offers a comprehensive exploration of the historical journey of ex-Yugoslavia and Albania, providing students with a profound insight into the multifaceted dynamics that have not only shaped these nations but have reverberated throughout the broader Balkan region. Furthermore, this course will take us through a historical narrative that transcends mere chronology. We will scrutinize the democratic ideals and dictatorial regimes, understanding how these political pendulum swings have profoundly shaped the Balkan political landscape. Our analysis will delve into the intricacies of ethnic conflicts, their origins, their evolution, and the far-reaching consequences that continue to shape the Balkans today. Key political milestones will serve as our guideposts. This course will extend to the involvement of external powers, peacekeeping missions, and international organizations in Balkan conflicts.
