A month of events to celebrate Europe!
This year, to mark Europe Day, the Université Catholique de Lille is celebrating the culture and history of the city of Lille through a special program of events, curated by historian Garrett Epp.
“Truth, History & Memory in Lille” workshop
The program begins with the workshop ‘Truth, History & Memory in Lille’, dedicated to the traces of the First World War in Lille’s urban landscape. Deeply scarred by the conflict, the city still preserves numerous reminders of this period today… provided you know where to look. This workshop invites you to explore iconic sites and discover often-overlooked stories, revealing the daily life and upheavals experienced by Lille during the Great War. A vivid immersion in history to (re)discover the city from a fresh perspective.
Date: 4 May 2026, from 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm
Location: room HA 047, 60 Boulevard Vauban
Visit of the Lille Moulins / Saint-Sauveur district
Following on from this workshop, we invite you to join us on a tour of the Lille Moulins / Saint-Sauveur district. During the walk, let us guide you through a rich and varied heritage: the remains of the city walls, traces of the Great War, former hospitals, the belfry listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a repurposed railway wasteland. A sensitive and dynamic exploration of the city, to understand how history has shaped Lille… and continues to transform it today.
Date: 6 May 2026, from 2pm to 5pm
Location: Metro Porte de Douai
Visit of the Vieux-Lille (old town)
Finally, to round off this cultural program, set off to explore the Vieux-Lille on a genuine ‘open-air’ tour. Rediscover this iconic neighborhood through its history and hidden stories. Guided by an expert historian, its streets, fades and monuments reveal the many European influences that have shaped the city over the centuries. A lively walk, exploring heritage, memory and urban identity, to learn to see the city in a new light.
Date: 19 May 2026, from 2pm to 5pm
Location: the meeting point will be communicated to registered participants a few days before the event
