Goal

The course aims to improve students’ knowledge of English of the business world. Students will be required to acquire basic business vocabulary and expand their knowledge of the business world. There is a strong current events aspect to the class as students will be required to become acquainted with the issues facing companies and executives today. Students can expect to read, interpret and analyze texts for gist, detail and inference. There will also be an emphasis on writing essays, constructing arguments, summarizing and synthesizing.

  • Introduction to the World of Work
  • Describing jobs, responsibilities and the workplace
  • Different forms of employment-employment patterns (gig economy/flexible working/uberisation/zero hours contracts/teleworking)
  • Working conditions/problems in the workplace (discrimination/stress/burnout/harassment)
  • Work- past and present and future trends (the impact of technology, …)
  • Pay and benefits (perks, benefits packages, healthcare, vacation time)
  • Job satisfaction & theories of motivation



Modalités

Forms of instruction

The small class sizes are designed to facilitate and ensure language acquisition and use through active student participation and involvement.
Common features of the classes will include: Discussions/debates, Short presentations, Role plays, Short case studies.
Students will be expected to fully prepare in advance for the classes thereby maximising classroom time. This will involve: the prior acquisition of the necessary vocabulary, the reading of prescribed articles, research on the internet to further their knowledge of the topics.
