Goal

This course will critically examine contemporary Japan through the lens of work, business life and

gender participation. The lectures are organised thematically. We will become familiar with some of the

core practices and operations of contemporary Japanese business culture and society. We will also

critically examine some important contemporary social issues and changes taking place in Japan.

By the end of the course students will be able to:

1) Understand and critically analyse contemporary Japanese society

2) Have a clear understanding of the various ways in which gender roles intersect in Japan

3) Avoiding stereotypes, students will develop a critical facility in examining culture
