Prerequisite
Course taught in English (No pre-requisite in French is required although it is advised that students register for a French language course).
Goal
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
Gain an in-depth understanding of contemporary French society.
Discuss and analyse various topics relevant to French culture in order to enable the student to interact with confidence with native speakers in professional or social contexts. Enjoy more fully their year in France.

Presentation
The course covers the following topics :
- Paris, a multifaceted city (Landmark monuments; architecture; the sociology of Parisian 'arrondissements' and near suburbs).
- French political institutions and the role of the State.
- The French society (e.g. education system, work, family, religion, leisure) depicted in the media and literature: a comparison with students' observations.
- An exploration of French culinary habits (haute cuisine, Parisian bistros and cafés, regional specialities).
-The arts and people who contributed to make France what it is today.
