Goal
Engineering ethics
Each student should be able to:
- Make the difference between being submitted to an external system of moral values and adopting his own ethical behavior.
- Understand that every situation in which a decision has to be taken is always complex.
- Base his decisions upon an ethical reflexive method in order to avoid the unwanted consequences of impulsive reactions.
- Explain the fundamental concepts of modern ethics (sustainable development, fair trade, etc.)
- Determine if a given mission is in accordance with the Charter of the CNISF ( National Council of Engineers and Scientists of France).

Engineering ethics
First semester: interactive course on the following questions:
- What do we call “Ethics” and what is the difference between “Ethics” and “social morality”?
- What are the functions of Ethics in private and professional life?
- What are the limits of Ethics?
- What are the main characteristics of social morality in our contemporary Western world?
- How can we adopt an ethical reflection in a complex concrete situation?
Second semester: Students presentations.
Three students groups will have to realize an oral presentation on a subject chosen among a given list. There are three kinds of subjects:
1- Case studies showing how an ethical decision was elaborated.
2- Biographies of scientists or engineers that give examples of behaviors and decisions that can seem paradoxical at first sight.
3- Analysis and illustration of a major concept of Ethics.
