Présentation

Prerequisite
The course aims to equip students with an understanding of the main issues in the management of innovation and an appreciation of the relevant skills needed to manage
innovation at both strategic and operational levels. An interest in innovation and ICT would be useful. Students will get to enhance their critical thinking and verbal skills through class and syndicate discussions. An entrepreneurial aspect is also incorporated into the course. Students will be required to come up with a unique idea for an ICT product or an Internet based business, and develop the business plan for their idea.
Goal
At the end of the course, the students should be able to:
1. Understand how innovation happens in organisations and what management can do to facilitate it
2. Diagnose different innovation challenges and make recommendations for resolving them
3. Analyse the usefulness of social media technologies in delivering open innovation
4. Prepare a business plan for an Internet based business
Presentation
For almost all organisations, continuous innovation is the key to long term sustainability and success. Thus, the purpose of this course is to examine how innovation happens in organisations. Specific attention will also be given to understanding how ICT systems can be used to both create and support innovation activities. Focusing on the components of innovation success – ideation, idea selection, collaboration, portfolio and project management, ambidexterity etc. – the course will present and critique numerous case studies detailing how management can bolster innovation and what ICT can play. In some cases, ICT can stifle innovation and these will be debated also. Emerging innovation management concepts such as ‘open innovation’ and ‘service innovation’ will be assessed along with the potential for social media technologies within these paradigms.
