Goal

At the end of the class, the student should be able to analyse different types of pictures


(paintings, engravings, drawings) thanks to technical terms. He/she also should be able to spot key moments of English history and acquire some cultural notions.


Presentation

This class will look at key moments in British history and basic cultural concepts using various artistic supports: paintings, engravings, sketches, photos etc. We shall also learn the technical vocabulary needed for this type of analysis.


We shall be looking at three main areas:


- The visual arts in Britain from the Renaissance to the 20th century.


- How to understand and analyse the visual arts in English


- Structuring an artistic analysis or commentary
