Prerequisite

The student must have a general knowledge of business, management and economy concepts. Good comprehension of English.

Goal

The study of ‘social economy’ enables the understanding of the relevance that the social economy organizations play in today’s societies. This course intends to give insights about the historic evolution, conceptualization, growth and role of the social economy, through different approaches, models and practices applied to a variety of social economy organizations. Will be given to the students the opportunity to critically reflect and discuss all the topics presented during the class.  To understand the different concepts, historic evolution and the role of social economy organizations.  To comprehend the role of managers in social economy organizations.  To form an appreciation and criticisms of the complexities of the sector.

SESSION 1


Topics: ï‚· What is the social economy?


Main goals:  To understand the historical evolution of the social economy sector.  To understand the evolution of the concept, as well as the different definitions.  To understand the composition of the sector (actors and types of organizations), the values, the characteristics, and its place in the whole economy.


SESSION 2


Topics:Â ï‚· The trends of the social economy sector in Europe


Main goals:Â ï‚· To understand the recent trends of the sector in the European Union. ï‚· To verify the several differences regarding the size of the sector across different European countries


SESSION 3


Topic:Â ï‚· Elaborate a Case Study


Main goals:  To elaborate a case study about a social economy organization.  To learn about the chosen organization and why it is considered an organization of this sector.  To correlate the learnings about the concept, values and characteristics taught in class with the specific organization.


SESSION 4


Topics:Â Â ï‚· Social Origins of the social economy sector


Main goals:  To understand the social origins of the sector.  To discuss the six main theories of the social origins of the sector.


SESSION 5


Topic:Â ï‚· Role and Impact of the social economy organizations


Goals:  To understand the role and impact that these organizations play in today's’ societies.  To understand the role that these organizations play in local development.


SESSION 6


Topics: ï‚· Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)


Main Goals: ï‚· To understand the importance of SDGs in today's societies. ï‚· To visualize how the social economy organizations respond to the societal most press needs and problems. ï‚· To understand the involvement of these organizations in fulfilling the SDGs and reaching sustainable development.


SESSION 7 and SESSION 8


Topics:Â ï‚· Social Enterprises, Social Entrepreneurship, Hybrids Organizations


Main goals:  To grasp the concepts of social enterprises, social entrepreneurship and hybrid organizations.  To comprehend the differences between a typical non-profit organization and a social enterprise.  To understand and discuss hybrid organizations.


SESSION 9


Topic:Â ï‚· Presentation of the case studies in a Poster format


Main Goal:  To summarize the case study elaborated in class.  To share with the colleagues the different organizations of the social economy.
