Pour l’ouverture de l’année universitaire 2026-2027, l’école est ravie d’accueillir Lea Ypi pour une conférence intitulée « How capitalism undermines freedom ».

Une tradition majeure en philosophie soutient que, contrairement aux autres animaux, les êtres humains font l’expérience de la liberté en lien avec la responsabilité morale. Selon cette conception, la liberté comporte à la fois une dimension interne et une dimension externe. La liberté interne est la liberté nécessaire pour penser ce qui est juste. La liberté externe est celle qui est nécessaire pour faire ce qui est juste.

J’appelle liberté d’agir la liberté qui nous permet de faire ce qui est juste. J’utilise le terme « agir » (agency) afin de la distinguer du choix, que j’entends comme la capacité à sélectionner une option parmi plusieurs possibilités.

L’argument que j’explorerai dans cette conférence est que le capitalisme porte structurellement atteinte à notre liberté d’agir, alors même qu’il semble respecter notre liberté de choix.

Lea Ypi est professeure Ralph Miliband de politique et de philosophie à la London School of Economics (LSE). Théoricienne politique de renom, ses travaux portent notamment sur la liberté, la justice, la démocratie et la pensée politique.

Elle est également l’autrice de Enfin libre : Grandir quand tout s’écroule, un récit autobiographique traduit dans plus de trente-cinq langues.

Each year, ESPOL opens its academic year with a major lecture given by a leading academic or expert from the professional world, focusing on one of the major themes addressed in its programmes.

For the opening of the 2026–2027 academic year, ESPOL is delighted to welcome Lea Ypi for a lecture entitled: “How capitalism undermines freedom”

Abstract

A prominent tradition in philosophy maintains that, unlike other animals, humans experience freedom in connection to moral responsibility. On this account, freedom has both an internal and an external component. Internal freedom is the freedom required to think what is right. External freedom is the freedom required to do what is right.

I call the freedom that enables us to do what is right freedom of agency. I use the term agency to distinguish it from choice, which I understand as the capacity to select between different options.

The argument I explore in this lecture is that capitalism structurally undermines our freedom of agency, even as it seems to respect our freedom of choice.

About the Speaker

Lea Ypi is the Ralph Miliband Professor of Politics and Philosophy at the London School of Economics (LSE). A leading political theorist, her work explores freedom, justice, democracy and political thought.

She is also the acclaimed author of Free: Coming of Age at the End of History, an internationally celebrated memoir that has been translated into more than thirty-five languages.
