The aim of the course is to analyse and interpret the EU’s role and influence in the world. This involves examining a mixture of political and economic relations, and exploring how they interact with each other. The course is divided into three thematic components: the first three classes will set the scene by introducing theoretical ideas relevant to understanding the idea of a “global EU”, and will then examine the decision-making structures at both the EU and the national levels. The second component focuses on the EU’s global economic relations. The third component looks at the EU’s political relations, and finishes with an examination of future challenges.
