This course introduces students to the academic discipline of International Relations (IR). It examines the main theoretical approaches to the study of the subject matter called “international relations” or “international politics”. The course also surveys the key actors, events and processes, as well as the most topical issues and relevant academic debates that define international – or as it is increasingly referred to as “global” – politics in the 21st century. The course equips students with the necessary conceptual tools to not only understand the drivers of contemporary international challenges, but also critically engage with their possible solutions. It bridges theoretical analysis in IR with real-world events by drawing on a range of case-studies, including from the Indo-Pacific region where many of today’s most pressing global problems are concentrated. In doing so, the course considers the need to “globalise” IR, a largely Western-biased and Eurocentric discipline, by opening the analysis to non-Western perspectives and forms of knowledge.
