We are proud to announce the creation of the Research Chair in Comparative Direct Democracy at the Université Catholique de Lille, within the ETHICS Research Unit.
Led by Raul Magni-Berton, this new chair aims to explore one of the most pressing challenges of our time: rethinking democratic governance in an era of declining trust and institutional transformation.
Why this Chair matters
Across Europe and beyond, traditional democratic systems are facing increasing skepticism. At the same time, interest in direct democracy mechanisms—such as referendums and citizen initiatives—is growing.
But can these models be successfully adapted across different political and cultural contexts?
Our ambition
This Chair seeks to:
- Analyze how direct democracy can be introduced and adapted in Europe
- Identify which institutional designs generate positive democratic outcomes
- Better understand citizens’ demand for participation and engagement
A strong international dynamic
The Chair builds on collaborations with key partners such as Democracy International and the Swiss Democracy Foundation, and contributes to major projects including:
- Global State of Direct Democracy Report
- Navigator to Direct Democracy database
- Twin4Dem (Horizon Europe)
Combining quantitative methods, experimental approaches, and international expertise, this initiative aims to provide concrete insights for researchers, policymakers, and citizens alike.
Stay tuned for upcoming publications, events, and opportunities to engage with this exciting new research agenda.
