Students can attend this course if they have passed Public International Law 1 and if they have a good understanding of English and the ability to write in English.
The course aims at empowering students to understand and critically analyze international legal instruments, institutions, problems and events. By examining primary materials, this course focuses on the interaction between law and practice. In particular, the course focuses on the structure, sources and functions of the United Nations (UN) in order to provide the students with the knowledge and tools to understand certain contemporary issues. This is essential to a proper understanding of the United Nations, but also to the possibilities and limitations of multilateral institutions more generally. Furthermore, the course focuses on the topics of dispute settlement and international responsibility in order to allow students to examine the ways in which claims, notably those involving international responsibility of a State, can be brought before international courts and tribunals, most notably the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The course also examines the rules on the immunity of the State and of International Organizations, the law of armed conflict and on the protection of human rights and cultural heritage.
