The Catholic Institute of Lille and the Polytechnic University of Hauts-de-France: partners for doctoral excellence

Etudiants au travail

The Université Catholique de Lille (ICL) and the Université Polytechnique des Hauts-de-France (UPHF) have established a strategic project alliance, particularly through research initiatives at the interfaces of disciplines and research units, to collectively address the major contemporary challenges facing our societies, notably those related to artificial intelligence, mobility and transportation, creative industries, and population aging.

This historic strategic alliance has enabled the integration of five ICL research units into the PHF Doctoral School (Doctoral School No. 635):

  • C3RD (Research Center on the Relationships between Risks and Law; Faculty of Law)

  • ESPOL-LAB (ESPOL)

  • LITL (Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Transitions in Lille; Faculty of Management, Economics and Sciences and JUNIA)

  • MUSE (comMUnication, Society, Environment; Faculty of Arts and Humanities)

  • ETHICS EA 7446, with several teams hosted or co-hosted by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the Faculty of Medicine, Midwifery, and Health Sciences, the School of Social Sciences (ESSLIL), and the ISTC.

Building on its interdisciplinary approach, the faculty members and doctoral students of ICL are engaged in the “Science and Technology” and “Societies and Humanities” hubs of the PHF Doctoral School, which is distinguished by its promotion of interdisciplinarity not only within a single hub but also between the two hubs (poly-science crossovers), with the aim of producing bi-disciplinary doctoral theses.

At ICL, 100% of doctoral theses defended in less than three years for successful professional integration

ICL implements a clear and ambitious doctoral policy aimed at facilitating the completion of high-quality mono- and bi-disciplinary doctoral theses registered at the PHF Doctoral School (ED PHF), with the goal of strengthening ICL’s academic research activity and research-based training, while also supporting the professional integration of its doctoral graduates.

ICL’s doctoral ambition is backed by a strategy to increase the number of faculty members and researchers habilitated to supervise research (HDR), with 11 HDRs awarded between 2022 and 2024.

Furthermore, ICL demonstrates its commitment to assisting doctoral candidates and their supervisors in providing optimal conditions for enrollment, both in terms of developing the scientific project and securing funding (approximately 50 doctoral students in 2023–24).

L’ADICL, Association of Doctoral Students at the Catholic Institute of Lille

A space for young researchers to meet, train and support each other. The ADICL, Association des Doctorants de l’Institut Catholique de Lille (Association of Doctoral Students at the Catholic Institute of Lille), was created in March 2024. It welcomes most of the doctoral students currently enrolled in the faculties, laboratories and research units of the ICL, who are mainly registered at the ED PHF.

Its purpose is to protect the interests of doctoral students and young doctors at the ICL and its affiliates. It facilitates networking and exchanges between doctoral students, organises scientific events and promotes their research work.

By promoting group cohesion, the association offers everyone a space to support each other in their thesis work, in particular by organising meetings between young researchers.

The association is a free and independent structure that upholds scientific, ethical and human values.
