Colloque "Planetary surveillance conference – The 11th Biennal Surveillance Studies Network"
Planetary crises—climate change, biodiversity loss, migration, financial instability—are increasingly understood through surveillance-driven metrics. Surveillance promises planetary knowledge and risk management, yet often reproduces inequalities, exclusions, and power asymmetries. Operating from satellites to everyday algorithms, surveillance infrastructures now claim planetary reach. They shape how climate, ecosystems, borders, health, and security are monitored and governed. Surveillance is central to emerging forms of planetary intelligence, linking data extraction, artificial intelligence, and environmental monitoring. While framed as essential to planetary survival, surveillance can intensify insecurity and injustice. At the same time, it opens spaces for critique, resistance, and alternative futures. SSN 2026 invites critical engagement with surveillance at planetary scales, from micro-habitats to global systems.
