The course is not requiring particular technical skills or knowledge that is not expected in a student at university level. It concentrate on business aspects and benefits but a generic ability to use a Windows based PC and software is expected.

The students will be required to do some self-learning and project work, individually and/or in group, during and between class sessions. A self-driven attitude will help.

It is important that the student understand active participation is demanded together with a hands-on attitude. Much of the assignment is done in highly participative group-work setting. An inquisitive mindset and some curiosity for the topic would help.

Students will be mandatorily required to download MS Project 2010 (and Excel in the unlikely event that they don't already have it on their personal laptop) software from the school network and install it in their personal laptop, that will need to be brought to class. It is the responsibility of the student to make sure this happens and all is working; further notes will be posted in the course intranet page and it is the responsibility of the students to comply with the instructions posted there.

Students must deliver any eventual files and deliverables subject to grading in MS Excel/Word/Powerpoint/Project (Win) and not Apple formats; where necessary student can use school IT facilities as normally available but having only Apple personal laptop is not an excuse. No Prezi files. Files for eventual presentations will need to be in the main PC attached to the projector by the deadline and not in indivdual laptops. Please mark all eventual files with the name (or that of your group if relative to groupwork) and according to any other instructions given in class (or penalties will apply).

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
-Appreciate the general nature of management consulting business
-Understand the functioning of a consulting firm and its typical processes and issues
-Understand how a Mangement Consultant fits in a consulting organisation
-Utilise some strategic analysis and data analysis techniques used in consulting
-Be able to perform simple analitical consulting tasks in an efficient and planned manner utilising project management techniques and MS Excel/Project
-Appreciate some practical issues tied to qualitative/business analysis and data gathering in organisations
Be able to present a consulting project (proposal or results of an engagement) to a client in a professional manner

This course will introduce the student to the basic elements of the management consultancy business, as practiced in most typical consulting environment. A number of cases/annedoctes/techniques will focus on different aspects of the profession/practice. Management consulting remains a popular career choice but undertaking a consulting project for the first time can seem daunting for the student and often internal management engagments are very similar to that of a management consult anyway, so the skills are the same.The course aims specifically to guide students through the consultancy process, while also giving tips and techniques to the more seasoned practitioner. This is delivered from the insight of the teacher who has been consultant both internally and externally. It provides a careful balance between theory and practice and is an ideal help for students who will undertake a consulting project during their thesis or in their future workplace.

The course is divided in six parts roughly organised as follows (changes may apply):

>Part Six - Mini-project (extending after the end of the taught course)
-Students to work in groups (or individually as feasible and decided by the lecturer in class) on a fictional but realistic project, for which a introductory report and a project plan will need to be prepared. Note that this will extend after the end of the taught course and therefore students should make provisions for extended project work outside of class time (in their own time) and coordinate among themselves; having to attend other courses or having other course work to do will not be accepted as excuse. Work may well require a mix of individual and group work. A presentation to the class (before the end of the taught course) could be required, and in that case it will be part of the project grade. Groups will be mixed-up by the lecturer to represent the diversity of real project teams, so do not expect to work with colleagues you know already. Groups will also ONLY be made with people present in class on the day when they are formed. For operative reasons no exceptions will be allowed. Details TBC in class by lecturer.

Other individual and/or group assigments may be assigned daily in class and may require work after class. Please be aware of it and keep sometime in your calendar; it is the student responsibility to ensure there are no clashes and that enough time is available, including the coordination with your evetual group/team members. These groups may be different from the mini-project's groups.

Some adjustments to this regime may be announced by the teacher in class and will be eventually reflected on the assessement methods. Four hours revision before the final exam on Day 4 should also be plenty if the 16 hours of class time are attended with attention and focus. Students are advised not to start revising only on the last day though as the course is rather intensive in nature.
