Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- Master the topics related to design, planning and control of complex industries in manufacturing and service operations
- Understand the operations contribution to the development and implementation of a successful business strategy
- Describe industries that exhibit a complex operations structure
- Identify the diverse complexity dimensions/elements of a business structure/process
- Demonstrate working knowledge of technologies supporting complex operations
- Identify emerging organisational structures corresponding to complex operations
- Define key business processes in complex industries and establish their performance objectives
- Address and manage ethical issues in complex industries

1. The different types of operations (decisions for manufacturing/service operations management)
2. Complexity dimensions from diverse aspects of operations
3. Uncertainty and resource allocation
4. Strategic alliances (virtual enterprises, supply chain integration)
5. Emerging organisational structures corresponding to complex operations
6. Coordinated product and complex industries design (design for logistics, supplier integration into new product development, mass customisation)
7. Customer value and complex industries management (tools for addressing complexity, customer value dimensions, strategic management)
8. Business ethics in complex operations
