This course requires knowledge of economics and above all a good command of the various market structures, be they perfectly competitive or not

Objectifs du cours

- do a market analysis using a precise analytical toolkit (Porter's 5Forces, Structure-Conduct-Performance diagram)
- identify and use different copperative and non-cooperative market strategies
- identify the different situations that may be related to the asymmetry of information (moral hasard, adverse selection) and how they impact producer behavior
- be able to apply different methods of calculating the equilibrium and especially understand the economic interpretation underlying the strategic decisions managers make
- identify the position of a firm within its market and identify appropriate strategies with regards to its competitors (real or potential).
- have greater awareness about ESRS topics such as: stakeholder theory, environmental issues regarding production, cooperation between firms

Contenu du cours

1. Market analysis: relevant market, concentration indexes, barriers to entry/exit the market (scale and scope economies, absolute cost advantage, capital costs, product differentiation), mergers and acquisitions, SCP mdoel, Porters's 5 Forces model
2. Firm behavior in an oligopolistic market: the limit price strategy, predatory pricing, excess capacity, R&D, rivals' indirect increase in costs
3. Information asymmetry and its effects on the state of competition: determinants, adverse selecxtion (with applications), moral hasard, agency theory
4. Vertical integration and vertical restrictions: transaction costs, relationship-specific assets, rents and quasi-rents, holdup problem.

This course introduces flipped learning as students are required to have read a certain number of materials before coming to class. A quizz is given at the beginnning of the class in order to check that students did this properly (4 times). Once per semester, and in groups of 4, students have to give an oral presentation, be discussants of another group's presentation, participate actively in debates, write a 2000-word synthesis and correct another work done by another group.
