Pré requis

This is an introductory course in corporate investment decision-making. Consequently, prerequisites for the students include: 1) a satisfactory understanding and knowledge of how company financial statements should be read and understood and 2) a business bachelor level in calculus.

Objectifs du cours

At the end of the course, the students should be able to:
- have acquired a good understanding of the main concepts needed in the process of making corporate investment decisions.
- use the techniques and tools to perform a financial analysis determining the opportunity to carry on or not with an investment project and bring his/her conclusions to management.
- have built foundation knowledge that will enable him or her to keep deepening its understanding and know-how of the field as he or she progresses in a career.

Contenu du cours

The course is structured around the study and practical testing of six concepts needed in corporate investment decision-making:
- Time value of money.
- Free cash-flow.
- Returns (IRR and ROIC).
- Basics of asset valuation.
- Capital budgeting.
- Value creation and decision-making.
The course covers most of the body of knowledge on these subjects in the CFA program (Corporate finance and Quantitative methods). Please note though, this is not a CFA preparation.
Students willing to study the field of corporate finance should understand that they are embarking a long journey and that this is a first step.
Connections between strategy and corporate investment decision will also be made during the class when studying the 3rd and 6th concepts.
