Pré requis

Students who register for this course should be familiar with
1. basic calculus, statistics and probability theory;
2. basic knowledge of financial derivatives such as forward and option contracts.

Objectifs du cours

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
-understand the principles and terminology of insurance and risk management in general;
-understand how individuals and businesses use insurance to obtain protection from risk;
-understand risk management techniques;
-understand various types of insurance coverages such as the homeowners, personal automobile and life insurance policy;
-understand the economics of insurance markets;
-understand commercial property and liability insurance.

Contenu du cours

This course is designed as an introductory course into the different types of non-speculative risks faced by individuals and businesses. In the first part, the course covers the definitions of risk and insurance, as well as various risk management techniques. This is followed by an in-depth study of insurance contracts that includes personal automobile policy, homeowners insurance and life insurance policies. In the final part, the course discusses the differences between personal and commercial insurance policies with an emphasis on commercial property and liability insurance.
