At the end of the course, the student should be able to :
Establish the gains from trade;
Realise why geography is important in the global economy;
Define export strategies.

1. Prelude
1.1 International trade at a glance.
1.2 The benefits of trade;
1.3 Winners and losers;
1.4 Exchange rate regimes.

2. Globalisation and protectionism issues
2.1 Globalisation in perspective;
2.2 Arguments for and against protection;
2.3 Multilateralism, bilateral agreements and regional integration;

3. The continual role of geographical factors
3.1 Principles of economic geography;
3.2 International Business, Export Decisions, and Outsourcing.

The final grade is calculated using the following formula:
20% Individual implication during lectures (punctuality, class attendance, interesting contributions to class discussions);
50% Final exam;
30% Group research (20 page report + 10 minute presentation followed by 10 minute discussion). Groups are composed of 2-3 students. Individual research can be accepted exceptionally.
Group research themes include:
1. The expected gains from EU-US agreements (session 3);
2. Silicon Valley (session 4);
3. French Cosmetic Valley (session 4);
4. Ruhr district (session 4);
5. Analysis of a specific cluster (session 4) (for a list of possible case studies see http://www.clusterobservatory.eu/index.html) ;
